What is API 5L Pipe?

API 5L is a grade that is part of the American Petroleum Institute. The API 5L Pipe is embedded with a chemical composition of the chemical composition of carbon, manganese, phosphorous, sulfur, silicon, copper, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. The outstanding content gives the API 5L Carbon Steel Pipe enhanced corrosion and oxidation resistance properties in a series of environments. The high-strength pipes are designed in seamless and welded pipe configurations. The versatile API 5L Line Pipe is used in high pressure transportation of petroleum and natural gas for different industries. The versatile API Line Pipe showcases a minimum tensile strength of 415mpa with a minimum yield strength of 245mpa.

API 5L Seamless Pipe vs API 5L Erw Pipe

Pipes in the API 5L grade are produced in seamless and welded erw configurations. Both these types can be differentiated on certain key features.

• The API 5L Seamless Pipe is produced through an extrusion process, where hot steel billets are passed to the pipe. ERW pipe on the contrary is first cold rolled and then spun over dies to give it a longitudinal seam. High-intensity current is passed through the edges to join the pipe in place.
• API 5L Erw Pipe has thinner walls than are lighter than the thick and heavy walls of seamless pipes.
• Seamless pipes have higher load-bearing capacity and strength as compared to ERW pipes.
• Seamless pipes require special equipment to be shaped and are more expensive than API 5L Welded Pipe.

API 5L PSL2 vs PSL1

API 5L grade is designed in PSL 1 and PSL2 grades that are designed for use in onshore and sour service applications. Both these types have certain identical features but can be distinguished from others.

• API 5L PSL 1 grade is equivalent to ASTM A106 B. The API 5L PSL2 is a higher specification pipe grade having strict production values.
• PSL 2 is designed with superior chemical and mechanical strength compared to class 1 grades.
• PSL1 grade components can be welded in all methods except continuous welding procedures. Modules of PSL 2 cannot be welded utilizing continuous or laser welding processes.
